Central Bali (Ubud) · Culture · 4 stops · about 8 hours
The day most people come to Ubud for, in the order that avoids the crowds: the terraces first thing, a coffee garden while the sun is high, the spring temple at Tirta Empul, and the monkey forest on the way back into town.
The trip, stop by stop
-
Tegallalang Rice Terrace
about 75 minutes
The steep terraced valley north of Ubud, still watered by the old subak system and worked by hand. Paths drop from the road down to the stream and back up the far side, which takes about forty minutes. Go early: by ten the road above is bumper to bumper.
Rain plan If it rains:
-
Coffee and Spice Plantation
about 45 minutes
A walk through a garden of coffee, cacao, vanilla and ginger, ending with a tasting tray of a dozen coffees and teas. Someone will show you the civet cages and the roasting pan. The tasting is free, the luwak coffee is not.
-
Tirta Empul Temple
about 75 minutes
A spring temple where Balinese families queue to bathe under a line of stone spouts for purification. You can join the ritual with a sarong and a guide's explanation, or just watch from the side. The spring itself bubbles up in a clear pool behind the bathing courtyard.
Rain plan If it rains:
-
Ubud Monkey Forest
about 75 minutes
A shaded forest sanctuary in the middle of Ubud with three temples, moss-covered stone bridges and several hundred long-tailed macaques living their own lives. Paved paths make it an easy walk. Hold onto anything loose and do not feed them.
Rain plan If it rains:
This trip uses 4 of your 4 slots. Lunch is a stop too, but it does not use a slot.
