Nyepi (Balinese Day of Silence): the whole island is closed, we do not drive
Our office adds a closure as soon as it hears of one. Temples can close for a ceremony at short notice, so we check again before every trip.

Nyepi, the Day of Silence
Nyepi is the Balinese new year. For 24 hours from 6 in the morning nobody may be out on the roads, the airport closes, and hotels keep their guests inside with the lights low. We do not drive that day. The evening before, villages parade ogoh-ogoh, giant figures of demons, through the streets.

Galungan and Kuningan
Galungan celebrates the victory of good over evil. It comes every 210 days, by the Balinese pawukon calendar, and Kuningan follows ten days later. Tall decorated bamboo poles, penjor, line the streets and families pray at the temples. Most places stay open; some temples close to visitors on the main days and others are very busy. When we know a place we visit is closed, it shows above.

Is everything closed in Bali on Nyepi?
Yes. On Nyepi, the Balinese Day of Silence, nobody may be out on the roads for 24 hours from 6 in the morning, the airport closes and hotels keep their guests inside. We do not drive that day. The next Nyepi is on Mon 8 Mar 2027.
Are temples closed on Galungan and Kuningan?
Most stay open, but they are busy with prayers and some close to visitors on the main days. When a place we visit is closed, our office adds it here and the builder will not plan it.
What if a place closes after I booked?
We check the closures before every trip. If a stop of your day closes, we swap it for an open one nearby and tell you before the day.
