Central Bali (Ubud) · Culture · 4 stops · about 9.5 hours
A thousand years of Bali in one day: a meditation cave carved in the eleventh century, a spring temple still used every morning, the ordered lanes of Penglipuran, and the volcano rim at Kintamani to finish.
The trip, stop by stop
-
Goa Gajah
about 60 minutes
An eleventh-century meditation cave with a carved demon mouth for a doorway, plus bathing pools that were dug out of the ground less than a century ago. Steps lead down to a stream and a scattering of old stone fragments in the trees. Compact, so it fits easily into a morning.
Rain plan If it rains:
-
Tirta Empul Temple
about 75 minutes
A spring temple where Balinese families queue to bathe under a line of stone spouts for purification. You can join the ritual with a sarong and a guide's explanation, or just watch from the side. The spring itself bubbles up in a clear pool behind the bathing courtyard.
Rain plan If it rains:
-
Penglipuran Village
about 75 minutes
A village kept to its old plan: one paved lane up the hill, identical gates on both sides, and a bamboo forest behind. Families still live here and some open their kitchens to visitors. Cool air, no traffic, easy walking.
Rain plan If it rains:
-
Kintamani Viewpoint
about 45 minutes
The rim of an old caldera looking across at Mount Batur, its black lava fields and the lake behind. Clearest in the morning before the cloud builds. It is a thousand metres up, so bring a layer.
Rain plan If it rains:
