West Bali · Culture · 4 stops · about 9 hours
The old Mengwi kingdom in an afternoon: its moated royal temple, a grove of forty metre nutmeg trees full of macaques, a second sacred wood with flying foxes overhead, and Tanah Lot at the end.
The trip, stop by stop
-
Taman Ayun Temple
about 60 minutes
The royal temple of the old Mengwi kingdom, a walled garden surrounded by a moat with a row of tall thatched towers inside. You walk the outside of the walls rather than entering the inner court. Flat, shaded and never crowded.
Rain plan If it rains:
-
Sangeh Monkey Forest
about 60 minutes
A grove of nutmeg trees forty metres tall with a moss-covered temple at the centre and a large troop of macaques. The trees are the real attraction. Nobody knows how they got here. Paved paths throughout.
Rain plan If it rains:
-
Alas Kedaton Monkey Forest
about 45 minutes
A small sacred wood with a temple in the middle, grey macaques on the ground and a colony of flying foxes hanging in the canopy overhead. Twenty minutes to walk around. Guides at the gate expect a tip rather than a fee.
Rain plan If it rains:
-
Tanah Lot Temple
about 90 minutes
A temple on a rock in the sea, cut off at high tide and walkable at low, with the most photographed sunset on the island behind it. The cliff path north leads to a second temple on an arch. Busy from four in the afternoon.
Rain plan If it rains:
This trip uses 3 of your 3 slots. Lunch is a stop too, but it does not use a slot. Tanah Lot Temple is in the evening slot, after them, and does not use one either.
