East Bali · Photography · 4 stops · about 8.5 hours

The green side of east Bali: rice terraces under Mount Agung, a Bali Aga village that still keeps its own calendar and its own weaving, and the coast at Candidasa for the last of the light.

The trip, stop by stop

  1. Sidemen Valley

    about 90 minutes

A green valley of terraced rice under Mount Agung, with footpaths between the fields and weaving workshops in the villages. An hour's slow walk shows you more than the drive does. Paths turn to mud after rain.

  2. Tenganan Village

    about 60 minutes

One of the original Bali Aga villages, older than the Javanese courts, with its own calendar, its own rules and the double ikat weaving that is made almost nowhere else. Families weave on the porch and will explain it. Flat and easy to walk.

    Rain plan If it rains:

  3. Taman Ujung Water Palace

    about 60 minutes

The ruins and rebuilt pavilions of a king's seaside pleasure garden, with long bridges over still water and a staircase to a hill view of the coast. Mostly open lawn and stone. Twenty minutes from Tirta Gangga, so the two pair well.

    Rain plan If it rains:

  4. Candidasa Beach

    about 45 minutes

A quiet stretch of coast with a lotus lagoon on one side of the road and sea walls on the other, and fishing boats pulled up on the sand. Not a swimming beach at high tide. Calm place to sit with a drink.

    Rain plan If it rains:

This trip uses 4 of your 4 slots. Lunch is a stop too, but it does not use a slot.
