East Bali · Culture · 4 stops · about 9.5 hours
Leave early for Lempuyang, where the split gate frames Mount Agung and the queue for the photo grows all morning. Then two royal water gardens, and a swim at a quiet bay on the way home.
The trip, stop by stop
-
Lempuyang Temple
about 120 minutes
Photos here are by the place's own photographers (sold there), not by your driver. The split gate at the first temple frames Mount Agung dead centre on a clear morning, which is why the queue for the photo can run an hour or more. Your driver takes a number as soon as you arrive. The temple itself continues up the mountain if you want the walk.
Rain plan If it rains:
-
Tirta Gangga Water Palace
about 75 minutes
A royal water garden of fountains, carved stone creatures and ponds full of koi, with stepping stones you can walk across. Built in the 1940s and rebuilt after the volcano buried it. Bring coins for the fish food.
Rain plan If it rains:
-
Taman Ujung Water Palace
about 60 minutes
The ruins and rebuilt pavilions of a king's seaside pleasure garden, with long bridges over still water and a staircase to a hill view of the coast. Mostly open lawn and stone. Twenty minutes from Tirta Gangga, so the two pair well.
Rain plan If it rains:
-
Virgin Beach
about 90 minutes
A wide bay of pale sand between two headlands, with bamboo warungs along the back and clear water for swimming. Quiet on weekdays. The road down is steep but sealed.
Rain plan If it rains:
