Besakih and the Mountain Temples

Besakih and the Mountain Temples

Rp 1.800.000 for 2 guests · Rp 900.000 per person from Rp 600.000 per person for 4

East Bali · Culture · 3 stops · about 8.5 hours

The mother temple on the slope of Mount Agung, the gate temple at Lempuyang and the water palace at Tirta Gangga. Long drives between them, so three stops is the honest number for this trip.

The trip, stop by stop

  1. Besakih Temple

    about 90 minutes

Bali's mother temple, a complex of more than twenty temples climbing the south slope of Mount Agung. Wide stone stairs, long views down to the sea, and a ceremony on most days of the year. Sarong and sash are required and lent at the entrance.

  2. Lempuyang Temple

    about 120 minutes

Photos here are by the place's own photographers (sold there), not by your driver.

The split gate at the first temple frames Mount Agung dead centre on a clear morning, which is why the queue for the photo can run an hour or more. Your driver takes a number as soon as you arrive. The temple itself continues up the mountain if you want the walk.

    Rain plan If it rains:

  3. Tirta Gangga Water Palace

    about 75 minutes

A royal water garden of fountains, carved stone creatures and ponds full of koi, with stepping stones you can walk across. Built in the 1940s and rebuilt after the volcano buried it. Bring coins for the fish food.

    Rain plan If it rains:

This trip uses 3 of your 4 slots. Lunch is a stop too, but it does not use a slot.

Highlights

  • Climb the stone stairs of Bali's mother temple
  • See the sea from the top terraces of Besakih
  • Reach the Lempuyang gate before the cloud arrives
  • Feed the koi at Tirta Gangga
